Modern Airports Driving Bangladesh’s Economic and Tourism Boom

Last Update: 25 September 2025

Bangladesh’s aviation sector is on the verge of a major transformation, driven by ambitious projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, tourism, and trade. Among the most significant initiatives is the Saiyadpur Airport project, proposed at an estimated Tk10,500 crore, which plans to convert the regional airport into a full-fledged international facility. This development will not only connect northern Bangladesh to the global air network but also create a hub for regional economic activity and long-term growth.

Building on this momentum, Kuakata Airport emerges as another strategic project, with feasibility studies expected to commence soon. Covering approximately 3,000 acres, the airport is envisioned to boost tourism along the country’s scenic southern coastline. Simultaneously, the proposed new Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport—currently under feasibility study by Japan’s Nippon Koei—remains a game-changing initiative, although the final location, either Munshiganj or Madaripur, is still being finalized. Together, these projects illustrate Bangladesh’s careful planning and its effort to integrate local needs with international expertise.

Cox’s Bazar International Airport stands out as a landmark in this transformation, featuring the nation’s first maritime runway and the largest runway in Bangladesh. This development will significantly strengthen tourism and trade, complementing other upcoming initiatives such as the Bagura Airport upgradation and Saidpur Airport development. These projects collectively reflect the government’s commitment to modernizing regional airports and ensuring equitable air connectivity across the country, reinforcing the broader vision for a well-connected national aviation network.

Ongoing expansions further demonstrate Bangladesh’s dedication to world-class aviation infrastructure. Projects at Rajshahi Airport, Sylhet Osmani International Airport, Cox’s Bazar International Airport, Ishwardi Airport, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (Terminal-3), and Barishal Airport are increasing capacity, improving passenger experience, and aligning facilities with international standards. These initiatives showcase a strategic approach to creating efficient, modern, and sustainable air transport, benefiting both domestic and international travelers while preparing the nation for future growth.

For foreign construction companies, Bangladesh’s aviation projects represent unparalleled opportunities. From entirely new international airports to major expansions and innovative maritime runway projects, the scale and diversity of these developments provide a platform for firms with cutting-edge technology, engineering expertise, and sustainable construction solutions to participate. Engaging in these initiatives promises not only substantial business growth but also a chance to contribute to Bangladesh’s emergence as a regional aviation hub, with lasting impact on the country’s economy, connectivity, and international standing.
