Pipelines : The Hidden Arteries Fueling Bangladesh’s Development

Last Update: 25 September 2025

They may not catch your eye like bridges or flyovers, but pipelines are the hidden arteries powering Bangladesh’s growth story. From energy security to safe water, these underground lifelines are shaping industries, improving daily life, and connecting regions in ways we often overlook.

One of the most significant undertakings is the Tk5,120.75 crore project by Titas Gas, which aims to install new pipelines across key industrial zones surrounding Dhaka, including Savar, Dhamrai, Manikganj, Saturia, and Aricha. By strengthening the energy backbone of these hubs, the project is set to fuel manufacturing, attract new investments, and boost employment opportunities. This expansion complements other national efforts to meet the rising demand for industrial gas supply.

Beyond Dhaka, the government is investing Tk4,500 crore in a major pipeline connecting Bhola to Khulna. To be completed by 2029, this 205-kilometre pipeline, undertaken by GTCL, is expected to unlock the gas potential of Bhola and deliver it to energy-hungry regions in the southwest. In addition, a 65-kilometre pipeline of 30-inch diameter is being planned from Satkhira to Khulna to transport gas from India—an important step toward cross-border energy cooperation and regional integration.

Pipeline projects are not limited to energy alone. The Chattogram Water Supply Improvement Project, backed by the World Bank, is reshaping the city’s water infrastructure by replacing 300 kilometres of old pipelines and introducing 87,000 smart meters. This initiative highlights how pipeline upgrades can directly enhance urban living, improve efficiency, and ensure a reliable water supply for households and businesses alike.

Looking ahead, more developments are on the horizon, such as the Moheshkhali–Bakhrabad gas transmission line and the much-anticipated Kolkata–Dhaka pipeline project. These ventures, along with the ongoing Titas expansions, reflect Bangladesh’s determination to strengthen both its domestic networks and international partnerships. Together, they signal a future where energy security and modern utilities form the backbone of national growth.
