Bridges and Tunnels Transforming Bangladesh’s Connectivity

Last Update: 25 September 2025

Bangladesh is entering a new era of connectivity with bold plans for bridges and tunnels that will reshape trade, transport, and regional development. The country’s long-term vision is ambitious, with the Bangladesh Bridges Authority (BBA) planning to undertake 77 projects over the next 30 years, including the construction of 47 bridges and three tunnels. This roadmap is not just about infrastructure—it reflects a commitment to faster, safer, and more reliable transport networks that will unlock new economic potential across the nation.

Among the headline initiatives is the proposed Second Padma Bridge along the Paturia–Goalanda and Pabna–Rajbari routes, targeted for completion by 2035. Equally transformative is the Bhola–Barishal Bridge, a 10.86-km-long mega project to be built by Japan’s Miyagawa Construction Ltd., linking Bangladesh’s largest island to the mainland. These developments promise to reduce travel times drastically, foster regional integration, and open up new growth corridors in previously underserved areas.

Innovation is also extending beneath the rivers. The Jamuna Tunnel, proposed between Balashi Ghat in Gaibandha and Dewanganj Ghat in Jamalpur, is undergoing a feasibility study by China’s Henan Communications Planning & Design Institute Co Ltd. Alongside this, several other upcoming projects—including the New Kalurghat Rail Bridge, Mongla Bridge, the 2nd Muktarpur Bridge in Dhaka–Munshigonj, and the Bhola–Barishal Bridge—are being prioritized to strengthen both passenger and freight connectivity, ensuring a balanced mix of road, rail, and tunnel infrastructure.

At the same time, progress is evident in projects already underway. The Jamuna Rail Bridge Project, the Teesta Bridge, and the Kewatkhali Steel Arch Bridge in Mymensingh are advancing steadily, all designed to ease bottlenecks in critical transport routes and improve regional linkages. These ongoing works complement the remarkable achievements of recent years, such as the Padma Bridge, Kanchpur Bridge expansion, Gumti Bridge, and the historic Karnaphuli Tunnel—the first underwater tunnel in South Asia—which together have already transformed connectivity and logistics in the country.

For international construction companies, this wave of projects represents a golden window of opportunity. From long-span river bridges to sophisticated underwater tunnels, Bangladesh is actively seeking global expertise in advanced engineering, technology, and sustainable construction methods. Collaborating here means more than delivering infrastructure—it is about contributing to a nation’s vision for regional integration, socio-economic uplift, and world-class connectivity. For foreign firms looking to make a lasting impact, Bangladesh offers a uniquely attractive landscape where ambitious projects and transformative growth go hand in hand.
