Sustainable River Projects Powering Bangladesh’s Growth and Safety

Last Update: 26 September 2025

Bangladesh, a land crisscrossed by rivers, depends heavily on its waterways for agriculture, transportation, and livelihoods. Recognizing the vital role rivers play, the government has prioritized large-scale projects to protect and manage these lifelines. In partnership with China, Bangladesh has been actively discussing the management of three major rivers—the Brahmaputra, the Ganges, and the Teesta—focusing on sustainable strategies to prevent flooding, ensure water flow, and optimize irrigation.

Along the coastline, another ambitious initiative is underway: a 12.5-kilometer embankment stretching from Domkhali in Mirsharai to Guliyakhali in Sitakunda. This embankment, designed to be 27 meters high with a 60-meter base and a 9.8-meter top, will not only protect coastal areas from tidal surges but will also host a two-lane road, enhancing connectivity while serving as a vital barrier against erosion.

In urban areas, river pollution is a growing concern, especially around Dhaka. The Umbrella Plan aims to save five rivers surrounding the capital, which are heavily affected by domestic and industrial waste, as well as encroachment. The government plans to invest $20 billion over seven years in this initiative. According to the World Bank, 29 specific projects are recommended for completion by 2030 to decontaminate Dhaka’s rivers, restoring both their ecological health and urban beauty.

Several key projects are either upcoming or ongoing to strengthen river protection nationwide. Upcoming efforts include the Umbrella Plan for Dhaka, the Mirsharai embankment, the Teesta Irrigation and Flood Control Project, the Sylhet Division Flood Control and Irrigation Project, and continued collaboration with China for river management. Meanwhile, ongoing initiatives such as the Padma River Protection Project and the Protection of the Meghna River and Floodplain Restoration are already demonstrating significant positive impacts.

Together, these projects reflect Bangladesh’s commitment to sustainable river management. By combining infrastructure development, international collaboration, and ecological restoration, the nation is ensuring that its rivers continue to support communities, agriculture, and the environment for generations to come.
